Your Morning Routine

Have your days been less productive and are you still searching for a way out to better yourself? Well there’s a solution for that and it’s called having a morning routine. It’s that simple but yet many of us are still struggling to get out of bed to focus on things we want to get done.

“Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise” said Benjamin Franklin. Having a morning routine or ritual opens the door for you to set your goals and accomplish them. Believe it or not a morning routine wasn’t just invented yesterday. There are a handful of morning routines but to prove to you it works, we’ll show you a schedule that was written over three hundred years ago that is still effective today.

Morning Routines:

Ever heard of the 5 am club? There’s such a thing and Benjamin Franklin himself was apart of it. The 5 am club is basically anyone waking up at that time to get their day started. His daily routine from 5 am to 8 am was to “’Rise, wash, and address Powerful Goodness’ (meditate or pray), ‘contrive day’s business and take the resolution of the day’ (set goals), ‘prosecute the present study’ (study or read) and lastly have ‘breakfast’”. He would implement two work time blocks from 8 am to 12 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm because he believed that there were separate blocks of time for deep and shallow work. It’s true because our attention span doesn’t last very long in today’s society especially with new technology and social media incorporated in our lives. But it’s mind blown to see that Benjamin Franklin didn’t even have nearly half the stuff we have today and he was still able to create a daily routine for himself that’s relevant to us.

When we look at the daily routine, we can tell that the most important things to get your day started begin early in the morning. If you take a look at the objectives he plans for each day, there’s really not that many hours in a day for you to accomplish the things you want. It’s important to give yourself some alone time to prepare for what the lies ahead you. But don’t worry; if you’re use to waking up late in the morning it’s never too late to join the 5 am club. Start waking up earlier in 30-minute increments so that it doesn’t shock your daily life. It’s necessary to take ‘baby steps’ to get where you want to go because it will increase your success rate.

Laura Vanderkam, author of “What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast”, wrote in her book the real lives of successful CEO’s common morning rituals. Some of the morning rituals were waking up early, exercise, medicate, reading, writing what their grateful for and spending time with family. These are the exact same rituals that Benjamin Franklin written three centuries ago.

It goes to show the science behind the morning routine works and as long as you incorporate it in your life you will be successful. To be successful, start by setting up goals for the day in order to have them accomplished daily. The secret is to turn small goals into small wins and those little achievements will add up day by day. Make sure what you’re doing is impactful to see progress.  Lastly, have a purpose because when you wake up in the morning with a mission it gives you a drive
